Styles of Play

February 2006·p. 95

THE SHORT VERSION

Andy Hoare revisits arguments about powerful armies through his experience of both competitive and narrative games. The same optimized list can be welcome in a tournament and disappointing when the other player expects a story-driven campaign. He argues that both approaches are valid when participants share expectations from the outset. The column’s practical concern is the purpose of the game agreed between players rather than a universal judgement on particular choices.
