The Trials of Albarak: None So Worthy

September 2025·pp. 108–115

THE SHORT VERSION

Newly acclaimed king Albarak learns that his son Andazar has died, and persuades Grombrindal to lead him into Shyish to recover the boy. The expected ancestral refuge has become a ruined fortress serving Nagash, where fallen kin and Mazur’s revenant oppose them and Andazar himself voices the god of death’s claim.

Grombrindal offers himself in exchange for the boy, then gives Albarak the chance to take up his immortal responsibility. Albarak accepts stewardship of all duardin rather than a private life, and the framing tale reveals that its elderly storyteller is the resurrected Andazar, reunited at last with his father in the White Dwarf’s guise.
