Jervis Johnson: The Spirit of the Game
December 2012·pp. 60–61
THE SHORT VERSION
Jervis examines the unwritten social contract that allows flexible tabletop rules to work. Different groups may value narrative armies or competitive optimisation equally sincerely, so disagreement need not mean either side has misunderstood the hobby. He recommends asking new opponents about army selection, house rules and expectations before play, and discussing moments of discomfort as they arise; a shared understanding makes even fiercely competitive games more enjoyable.
