THE SHORT VERSION

Spacing ships away from obstacles reduces the danger of unpredictable wind and handling, but deployment must still serve the scenario. Supporting pairs or trios can overwhelm an isolated vessel, particularly in boarding actions. Line abreast supports offensive reactions, whereas line astern creates overlapping broadsides at the cost of congestion if the enemy gets around the formation.
