Standard Bearer: Why We Run Tournaments

September 2010·pp. 68–69

THE SHORT VERSION

Jervis Johnson traces Games Workshop tournaments to a wish to bring hobbyists together and explains why winning alone has never been his aim. His revised Throne of Skulls format rewards opponents’ favourite armies, recognises success within each army type, and chooses the overall winner by performance above that army’s average. He argues that these incentives can encourage varied, enjoyable armies without restrictive composition rules or judges trying to decide which lists are sufficiently characterful.
