Painting a Cloak of Bats
September 2010·p. 80
THE SHORT VERSION
Konrad von Carstein’s dense cloak is approached from a grey mid-tone rather than built entirely upward from black. Mark Holmes separates leathery wings from brown fur, adds light highlights, then uses black, brown and red washes to create depth and a more organic tone. The final pale wing and warm fur accents keep individual bats visible, and contrasting armour prevents the whole miniature becoming one dark mass.
