Painting the Metal Areas

November 2008·p. 96

THE SHORT VERSION

Thin brown-and-gold base layers prevent the metallic decoration from becoming thick or uneven. Pure gold and increasing silver are blended upwards, with dark recesses restored before the strongest silver edges. Tinted purple and green glazes add subtle variation. Silver equipment follows a separate metal, black shade and brighter-metal sequence. Joe emphasises vigorous mixing when diluting metallics, since their particles can separate from the medium.
