Painting Shelob

March 2006·p. 90

THE SHORT VERSION

A childhood misreading of Tolkien’s description inspires Adam’s unusually pallid Shelob. Bestial Brown over black is progressively lightened with bone until the creature takes on a fleshy, unhealthy appearance. A diluted Brown Ink wash draws the stages together, and two gloss varnish coats create a wet-looking surface. The finish deliberately follows his personal image of the monster rather than copying the film’s coloration.
