THE SHORT VERSION

Dark hair rises from blackened Scorched Brown through Tanned Flesh and a bone-mixed finish. Skin uses Tanned Flesh, Dwarf Flesh and thin pale layers, while boots and bow fittings rely on Dark Flesh over a dark foundation. A white border receives tiny black lines as a repeating pattern. Sand bases painted Graveyard Earth and drybrushed brown and bone unify the heroes with their expeditionary force.

No Trick Pony

Gav Thorpe returns to the game after an absence and finds its familiar basic rules easy to recover, but effective play much harder to master. Studio opponents teach him new interactions by using them against his own forces. Reading the Easterling tactics becomes preparation for the issue’s battle report. His account distinguishes remembering how to move pieces from understanding when to spend Might or combine spells for a useful result.

Out of the East: A Shadow in the East Designer’s Notes

The designer’s notes introduce an Evil mounted force able to challenge Rohan and Gondor on their own terms. Mat Ward explains the durability of Easterling Kataphrakts, Khamûl’s ability to recover Will through combat and the new Khandish chariots. The Variags grow from Tolkien’s brief references through historical inspiration and the Perry twins’ designs, including better but less reliable mercenary troops. Eorl and other Good heroes ensure that the expanded armies arrive with opponents and a campaign setting.
