In Defence of Athel Loren
August 2005·pp. 20–37
THE SHORT VERSION
Mat Ward commands 2,500 points of new Wood Elves against Pete Haines’s Orcs and Goblins. Eternal Guard anchor Mat’s centre while Forest Spirits and small elite units cover the flanks; Pete fields a mass of infantry backed by boar cavalry, chariots, Trolls and a Giant. Early Elf losses include the Wardancers, Tree Kin and one Eternal Guard unit, although Pete’s Orc Shaman destroys himself in a miscast.
Wild Riders swing the battle by striking into the Orc centre and eventually running down the Trolls. The remaining Eternal Guard hold through repeated assaults, and Dryads avenge the fallen Treeman by killing the Giant at the end. The Elves win at great cost, with Mat blaming poor coordination for avoidable losses and Pete praising his monsters and boar riders. A closing fiction scene suggests the shattered Treeman may already be recovering.
