Building a Gondorian Ship
June 2005·pp. 113–115
THE SHORT VERSION
Nick Davis builds a large three-masted patrol ship from stepped foamboard layers separated by insulation-foam blocks. Tape establishes the hull shape before softened balsa strips cover it with planking; gunwales, a forecastle and a poop deck provide scale and elevation. Dowel masts, a spoked wheel, stiffened sails and PVA-treated rigging finish the structure. Successive grey drybrushes weather the wood, while layered browns and bone give the sails stained cloth.
