Neil Andrew Miller introduces Elias Bain as a newly inducted member of the Callous Jacks, certain that faithful service has earned the Emperor’s personal protection. A mission to eliminate an unusually cunning ork kommando leader becomes a test of that certainty when Bain ignores orders to pursue his quarry alone.
The apparent certainty of divine favour collapses under a devastating injury, and rescue depends on a comrade rather than an untouched triumph. Bain helps end the monster’s violence, but the price leaves him interpreting survival as abandonment, setting a darker foundation for the episodes to follow.
