The Trials of Albarak: A Debt of Ale
June 2025·pp. 98–107
THE SHORT VERSION
During Grungni’s Day preparations, a missing shipment of prized ale threatens Warden King Mazur’s hospitality to visiting Lofnir Fyreslayers. Albarak volunteers to retrieve it, and Beratak accompanies him while explaining why generosity and alliances matter as much as military strength. The search leads through a devastated caravan site to drunken Bonesplitterz; a successful raid for a remaining keg turns into disaster when ogors seize Albarak and his prize.
Trapped as a prospective meal, Albarak invents a drinking challenge and uses a dispute over unequal cups to set his captors fighting. He escapes with the last of the ale and refuses to abandon it when pursued, until Beratak arrives in a moment of startling, almost supernatural brilliance. The rescued drink permits the formal welcome at Erinbrok, turning a seemingly trivial errand into a test of courage, cunning and the responsibilities binding a community.
