Michael Perry recalls working with little more than a possible scale reference until the film images revealed Bill, Bert and Tom. Their arrival excited the playtesters, while a visit to Alan Lee and John Howe’s art department supplied full-size references for the makeshift cutlery weapons. The designers also learned about uprooted trees used in the fight and included them as alternative parts, connecting the models’ choices to observed production details.
