THE SHORT VERSION
Jervis Johnson explains why designing rules does not necessarily make their author a strong player. Designers may follow their original imagined battle instead of discovering every efficient use of the mechanics, and may spend games evaluating wording or points rather than pursuing victory. Deadlines limit endless revision and external playtesters expose overlooked possibilities, but neither automatically improves the designer’s win rate.
