White Dwarf and the games developers select a champion for each of three systems, turning their studio rivalry into a best-of-three contest. Jeremy Vetock gives the developers an early lead against Andrew Kenrick’s Rohirrim, but Matt Hutson’s Dwarfs hold Witchfate Tor and Adam Troke’s Necrons narrowly survive to win the decider. The introductions and post-game reflections stress the different pressures of each objective and the friendly competitive atmosphere behind the team victory.

Andrew Kenrick’s Rohan and Dwarf alliance attacks Jeremy Vetock’s Isengard force in a roughly 2,500-point War of the Ring battle using all three Field of Swords objectives. A disastrous first charge kills Éowyn, Éomer, Théoden and much of the army’s elite cavalry, leaving the Dwarves and remaining formations to recover what they can. The King’s Champion eventually kills the Cave Drake and the defenders fight back stubbornly, but Jeremy’s 17–8 victory reflects the first turn’s decisive losses. The report and later analysis show why a spectacular cavalry assault needs an answer to pikes, monsters and countercharges.

Two roughly 3,000-point armies fight for Khazad-dûm, with Durin and the Balrog serving as leaders for combined Kingslayer and To the Death scoring. The Dwarves deploy their entire household, while the Evil force can recycle destroyed common formations to represent an unending tide. Durin’s death threatens army-wide panic, whereas the Balrog sustains nearby creatures’ courage, giving each leader an influence beyond the points earned by killing it.
