RULES·WHITE DWARF 348

The Dark Marshal

December 2008·p. 24

THE SHORT VERSION

A more skilled and courageous Ringwraith leads through terror of failure, making nearby Evil warriors count as supported by a banner. Heroes are expressly excluded from that benefit. The full profile includes standard Nazgûl powers and mounted options, while the background portrays a cruel Númenórean ruler whose mortal habits only intensified under Sauron. His purpose is to strengthen the battleline rather than simply provide another independent spellcaster.

Editorial: Holiday Gaming

Mark Latham introduces December as an opportunity for varied holiday games, highlighting the new Chaos campaign, Ringwraith scenarios, Apocalypse formations and Grombrindal’s rules. The four collectors finish their challenge with a large team battle whose result surprised him. A tribute to Alan and Michael Perry marks thirty years of sculpting, while the second Marine painting instalment provides another project for readers’ holiday time.

War in the North: Campaign Rules and Sequence

A nominated general carries Eye of the Gods rewards between battles and can eventually ascend, earning bonus campaign territory; a further insanity result instead risks irreversible Spawnhood. Daemonic Heralds regain greater forms according to their patron’s sacred number. Enhanced spellcasting also triggers a dangerous flux table when spells fail. The ordered campaign grows in points, preserves its general and links preliminary battles to later alliances and a final contest.

Scenarios 1 and 2: The Chaos Wastes

Randomly selected Chaos landmarks turn the opening campaign battles into encounters with the landscape itself. Geological aberrations and brazen spires damage nearby troops, while a defended shrine grants favour. Familiar rulebook features fill out the terrain table. Haywire magic adds new miscast and irresistible-force combinations and can interact with the campaign’s flux table, making apparently routine casting a substantial tactical risk.
