Painting the Robes
October 2008·p. 92
THE SHORT VERSION
Elrond’s grey robe starts with Codex Grey and controlled brown shading in the deepest folds. Successive grey and white mixtures are blended over progressively smaller areas, reserving pure white for barely visible final accents. Neil distinguishes this soft transition from the extreme edge highlights suitable for metal. The accompanying advice starts paint dilution at equal parts water and paint, then adjusts it to the size and purpose of the surface.
