THE SHORT VERSION

On leaving the Skull Gate, Malus’s marching column is struck by concealed crossbowmen. Lhunara’s Cold One Knights respond with a savage charge while Malus pursues fleeing attackers through the rocks. Their apparent advantage becomes unsettling when his mount Spite starts behaving abnormally, interrupting a killing blow and charging back towards the road. The extract ends as Malus recognises a more serious danger behind the successful ambush response.
