Standard Bearer: Tournaments and Ways to Play

March 2008·pp. 58–60

THE SHORT VERSION

Guest columnist Rick Priestley takes inspiration from a large Blood Bowl gathering to challenge the idea that tournaments exist only for ruthless competitors. Mixing unfamiliar players exposes different assumptions, making tolerance important and revealing the rules writer’s tension between teaching and quick reference. He also argues that standard army sizes reflect tables, collections and available evenings rather than tournament control. Carefully prepared narrative games and convenient ordinary battles both have a place in the hobby.
