Painting Gold: Huron’s Decoration

September 2007·pp. 97–98

THE SHORT VERSION

Brown mixed into the gold basecoat reduces its yellow brightness before a purer gold mid-tone is applied. Controlled brown and selective purple ink shading enrich the recesses, while increasingly silver highlights pick out scratches and sharp edges. A final dark green glaze subtly changes the overall tone, showing how non-metallic colours can improve the depth and character of a metallic finish.
