Painting Masterclass: Gûlavhar
March 2007·pp. 90–93
THE SHORT VERSION
Pete Foley builds a sinister grey Gûlavhar through carefully blended dark skin, paler membranes and a flesh-toned abdomen. The lesson spends particular attention on the early transitions, since rough initial highlights would undermine later detail. Stippling supplies mottled wing texture, bright teeth and eyes create focal points, and selective gloss sharpens talons and horns. Fil Dunn’s red alternative shows how similar techniques can support a more extreme colour transition.
