Graham McNeill traces the Tyrannic War Veterans from the loss of the Ultramarines First Company at Macragge to Chaplain Cassius’s campaign for specialist anti-Tyranid training. Deathwatch service gives replacements experience, but their proposed status provokes a chapter-wide argument over the Codex Astartes. Marneus Calgar finally authorizes a trial on Espandor, where the veterans destroy an isolated nest without losing a warrior. Their success establishes methods combining Hellfire ammunition, flamers, anatomical knowledge and coordinated support from other squads.
