The Return of the King: Designer’s Notes

November 2003·pp. 110–115

THE SHORT VERSION

Alessio Cavatore explains the third rules manual’s changes in terms of clearer play and the available miniatures. Faster Orcs, revised spear support, cavalry clarifications, monstrous mounts, reusable throwing weapons and banner effects each address a specific problem or desired battlefield role. Changes to profiles and equipment bring characters from the earlier games into a more consistent collection, while full siege treatment is left for a supplement.

Matthew Ward describes the War of the Ring appendix’s battles beyond the films, including the Dwarves’ struggle toward Erebor and the defence of Lothlórien. Updated leaders support those scenarios without losing sight of their opponents. Hobby projects, visual presentation and a compact tournament introduction complete a manual intended to serve several kinds of player.
