The Chronicles of Bain, Part 5 of 5: Da Nasty Git

May 2026·pp. 102–111

THE SHORT VERSION

An overconfident Ork kommando stalks Elias Bain into a carefully prepared ambush, only to discover that the supposedly vulnerable human has made terror into a weapon. Bain deliberately spares the mutilated survivor to spread his reputation, prompting a friend to question whether he really wants to become the monster the enemy imagines. The squad’s next summons brings him before Yarrick, whose offer of promotion confronts Bain with a responsibility he would rather refuse.

Bain fears that wider command will multiply the deaths caused by his decisions. Yarrick argues that a fearsome reputation also gives Imperial soldiers hope, then makes clear that refusal is not an option. Their private exchange about faith leaves the newly promoted captain with a changed understanding of his role: even if he feels no hope himself, he can still provide it to those who fight beside him.
