The Chronicles of Bain: A Life That Matters
April 2026·pp. 96–105
THE SHORT VERSION
After their Valkyrie is shot down, Elias Bain and the understrength Callous Jacks must rescue a Ketanrin legate and his surviving niece from an immobilised Chimera. Bain discards the official’s precious possessions to make room for his men, then fights a desperate retreat through the jungle with an Ork pursuit closing on their failing transport. Calling friendly artillery onto their own position becomes their best chance of reaching the Imperial lines.
The mission succeeds, but more Jacks die and Kenna Partell’s grief hardens into a determination to become a soldier. Bain, already exhausted by the sacrifice of ordinary lives to protect privileged ones, tries to persuade her to choose another future. His public role as an Imperial hero prevents him from honestly answering whether service in this endless war is itself a life worth spending.
