The Chronicles of Bain, Part 3: Glory Makes Us Fools
March 2026·pp. 96–105
THE SHORT VERSION
Sergeant Elias Bain’s rescue of inexperienced Monpellar Shields is obstructed by Commissar Pietr Malviot, whose hunger for glory leads the combined force deeper into an ork-held underhive. An unnecessary firefight kills Muldrin Tegg while he saves the commissar, as well as other soldiers. Bain nearly shoots Malviot but instead exploits his vanity to persuade him to scout ahead with only the sergeant beside him.
When Malviot insists on attacking another group, Bain allows an ork nob to mortally wound him before killing the creature himself. He returns to the others and leads every remaining trooper to safety. The subsequent Imperial victory makes Malviot a martyr and Bain a hero while almost nobody remembers Tegg, leaving Bain uncertain whether his calculated act was justice or another betrayal.
