The Abbey’s promised harmony breaks down when an effectively immortal elite keeps the spring’s benefits while ordinary servants suffer and die. Pust exploits the resulting grievances for personal advancement, opens the sanctuary to Rotigus and survives the loyalists’ desperate flooding of the Abbey to pursue a longer campaign against its protections.
