INTERVIEW·WHITE DWARF 519

Of Heroes and Villains

December 2025·pp. 20–31

THE SHORT VERSION

The designers explain the cast and visual direction of Darkwater, a grounded adventure whose Nurgle horror grew from rediscovered Liber Chaotica imagery. The seven heroes reinterpret familiar quest archetypes through the Mortal Realms: Edmark’s polished knight contrasts with Bren’s scavenged equipment, Inara and Jacobus embody different relationships with Ghyran, and Drolf, Kelthannor and Drasher Vorn broaden the party’s cultures and silhouettes.

The enemies are presented as different manifestations of decay rather than interchangeable monsters. A three-sister witch, a defiling shaman, ancient Cankerborn and a brutally mutated war leader lead to the newly ascended Gelgus Pust. Close-up photographs link sculptural details, including living roots, wicker symbols, corrupted waystones and unfinished mutations, to each character’s role in the story.
