Vexation

THE SHORT VERSION

Sergeant-at-Arms Vasily Ivanov must escort Commander Senyavina to the auxiliary bridge as the battleship Vexation is overrun. Enginseer Astulax guides them through plague-filled bilges, but the surviving first officer Vitko prevents Senyavina from assuming command and intends to destroy the ship. Rival Chaos attackers turn the vessel into a battlefield, and a radiant serpentine demigod makes ordinary resistance seem meaningless.

Ivanov repeatedly sacrifices loyalty to immediate orders, first abandoning his squad and later killing Vitko to give Senyavina access to the command throne. Her defensive purge briefly promises survival, but Fulgrim breaks through the bridge door unharmed. When she threatens self-destruction, Ivanov uses his last shell on her instead and offers the ship to its conqueror, completing his surrender to survival over duty.
