Designers’ Notes: The Race of Men

March 2025·pp. 34–41

THE SHORT VERSION

Gavin, Lewis, Keith and Luke discuss translating The War of the Rohirrim into miniatures while keeping Rohan visually connected to the older film range. Leather, wool, horse motifs and crested helmets remain familiar, but the replacement plastic infantry have more natural movement and clearer silhouettes. Haleth’s commanding poses contrast with Háma’s lighter, more informal equipment, while Helm’s bare-handed fury and Héra’s two very different identities demand distinct sculpts.

The Hill Tribes draw on Wildmen rather than disciplined Dunlending soldiers, with rough fabrics, cracked leather and improvised equipment. Freca’s fine clothing and geometric decoration set him apart, while the emaciated Orc Shank, bulky Wrot and partially equipped Snow Troll communicate their personalities through anatomy and scavenged kit.
