Hobby Hangout: Birth of a Hero
February 2025·pp. 24–29
THE SHORT VERSION
Dan demonstrates how to develop a character conversion by building a Freeguild Marshal from Aqshy. He tests heads and weapon poses before choosing a Stormcast head, a Knight-Draconis flaming sword, keys and braziers that suggest a destroyed shrine. Dry fitting, gentle filing and sprue-cut emberstone keep the process adaptable while ensuring that each extra detail contributes to the hero’s setting.
The painting stage uses colour swatches and a digital mock-up to settle on black armour, worn brass and a muted orange cloak. Pale flesh and a dark base balance the warmth, while the sword moves from bright yellow at its hottest point through orange and red to black. A closing gallery shows how other conversions express the realms through candles, crystal, plants, souls and weapon choices.
