LORE·WHITE DWARF 503

Worlds of Warhammer: Through Darkened Glass

August 2024·pp. 6–13

THE SHORT VERSION

Andy Thomas-Clark explains why the Imperium’s inhabitants know far less about their history than readers of Warhammer fiction. Ten millennia of constant war, unreliable records, enormous distances and deliberate destruction have erased context even within powerful institutions. The Scouring’s attempt to suppress betrayal becomes one of the foundations of the ignorance it was meant to prevent.

The Imperial Creed fills missing history with sacred myth, while the Mechanicus hoards knowledge and discourages experimentation. Space Marine Chapters preserve fragments but lose their meaning, and traitors suffer their own distorted memories and agendas. These limitations are presented as essential to understanding the setting’s people rather than judging them through a reader’s privileged perspective.
