Alexander Dan Vilhjalmsson tells the story of Carnevale in the starving reclaimed city of Eldfell. Beneath its streets, Marquess Termina and her supposed noble household distribute a miraculous abundance of meat, while Marshal Erika Dertessa tries to keep the surface festivities peaceful. As the feast changes what its victims remember and perceive, a returning king reveals how the defeated Flesh-eater court has found a new way to recover its people.
