Phoenixbark Wargrove by Josh Mawer
July 2023·pp. 110–111
THE SHORT VERSION
Josh Mawer imagines Alarielle resurrecting the lamentiri of forest spirits burned during the wars against Chaos. His blackened bark and fiery bodies draw on images of the Australian wildfires, with the painting evolving from successive warm drybrushes to wet-blended Contrast colours on later models. Crackled lava-like bases reinforce the recovered-from-embers story and record his growing confidence over the project.
