Skysplinter Assassin Vypos Nyqist helps a Hand of the Archon capture an escaped psyker aboard the Gallowdark while surviving Adeptus Arbites pursuit. His true assignment is a second layer of intrigue: Lady Malys has told him to submit to the rival Veskine’s torture, memorise the information it reveals and use an implanted trigger to escape. When the device fails, Veskine imprisons his soul instead.

An Arbites survivor receives orders to abandon the lost prisoner and join a wider recapture operation. Malys’s closing reflections reveal why the psyker mattered: its hereditary connection enabled the sabotage of a human arsenal and the humiliation of a rival Archon. Nyqist’s sacrifice also exposed Veskine as that rival’s spy, making his apparent mission only one move in Malys’s larger game.
