Grombrindal: Ancestor’s Burden — King Osgek’s Prize

May 2023·pp. 132–141

THE SHORT VERSION

Justec the Thirty-First survives captivity in his ancestral hall by singing to the ghoul court of King Osgek. When captured duardin are brought before the throne, he uses the court’s mistaken acceptance of him to delay their deaths. Rigo arrives and retells the family’s history, repeatedly evading the ghouls while revealing how a stolen shadeglass relic trapped the Aranthine son’s soul in a cycle of rebirth.

The truth forces Justec to face his inheritance as more than a set of comforting songs. Rigo’s delay gives Rat-Tail time to reach the prisoners, and Justec challenges Osgek, killing his cursed ancestor with the relic itself. He draws on old memories to guide the duardin out, meeting Rigo’s larger company on the mountain as the journey towards Thorga resumes.
