The Pinnacle of Painting
January 2019·pp. 72–75
THE SHORT VERSION
Darren Latham reflects on returning from judging Golden Demon to entering it. He explains colour, texture and lighting decisions on an Ultramarine, a Blood Angels Captain, a Kharadron Endrinmaster and Elucia Vhane. Very thin layered blends, deliberately chosen contrasts and a new challenge for each piece make competition painting a way to develop rather than repeat established skills.
