Jervis Johnson: The Joy of Random Tables
January 2014·pp. 58–59
THE SHORT VERSION
Jervis recalls the sprawling tables in Realm of Chaos and distinguishes their narrative appeal from the frustration of having dice dictate which models a player could field. His campaign experiment gives each character a random family heirloom as an optional extra. He argues that unpredictability works best when it enriches a game’s story without controlling the collector’s choices.
