Guy Haley’s novel follows the Mars Triumphant and its Paragonian crew through the brutal fighting on Kalidar IV. Jes praises the relationship between the tank’s physical scale and the soldiers’ more personal fears. Lieutenant Bannick’s earlier life emerges through flashbacks, while the Ork warlord Greeneye supplies a powerful opposing presence. Brief interstitial passages widen the sense of the campaign beyond the tank crew.
