Standard Bearer: Tools of the Trade
February 2012·pp. 56–57
THE SHORT VERSION
Jervis Johnson considers the emotional attachment gamers develop to tape measures, dice and other familiar tools, recalling Rick Priestley’s tape and Andy Chambers’s formidable presence across the table. He argues that templates and physical measurement shape the experience of a miniature battle as well as resolving its mechanics: flame weapons change how models spread out, and modest imprecision invites judgement and trust between players. Those tactile habits become part of the pleasure and memory of the hobby.
