THE SHORT VERSION

Jervis Johnson describes losing his Vampire Lord and Zombie Dragon to cannon fire on the first turn, then discovering that the ensuing battle remained close and memorable. He connects that experience to deliberately unequal scenarios: an unexpected disaster can create the same interesting challenge as a planned last stand. Continuing with good humour respects an opponent and leaves room for a satisfying comeback even when victory ultimately escapes.
