THE SHORT VERSION

Jervis Johnson argues that rules for a miniature wargame should grow from its models and imagined world. Abstract games can succeed on their mechanics alone, but an unrelated special ability can weaken a Warhammer design even if it balances well. He recommends returning to the background and miniature when a rule needs improvement, while remaining willing to reconsider familiar assumptions during development.
