THE SHORT VERSION

Gav Thorpe explains why fiction must interpret the qualities behind tabletop rules rather than translate numerical profiles literally. Army lists represent common organisations, leaving room for unusual task forces and practical battlefield improvisation, while individual Marines can remain distinct within their shared archetype. Fearlessness changes the source of dramatic tension: duty, failure, loyalty and an unfinished mission can threaten a Space Marine even when pain and death do not.
