PAINTING·WHITE DWARF 365

Boar Fur

May 2010·p. 96

THE SHORT VERSION

Keith plans the boar’s stripe pattern on paper before painting, using real patterned fur to avoid an arbitrary cartoon effect. A muted brown coat is shaded, drybrushed and selectively highlighted before the black stripes are blocked in. Successive grey marks follow individual clumps of dark hair, keeping the pattern readable while retaining the sculpted fur’s texture and a restrained palette beneath the brighter rider.
