PAINTING·WHITE DWARF 362

Crystalline and Mirrored Surfaces

February 2010·p. 81

THE SHORT VERSION

Joe Tomaszewski uses alternating light and dark planes to suggest a reflective crystal sword, then adds fine white reflection marks and a yellow glaze near the hilt. An hourglass follows related principles, with the visible sand considered alongside the shape of the glass. Both examples depend on reference and a chosen light source, making the reflection pattern more important than simply painting the whole object pale blue.
