Painting Sculpted Banners
February 2010·p. 85
THE SHORT VERSION
Tom Winstone works from a Cadian banner’s background towards its raised foreground details, shading the folds throughout rather than merely colouring separate shapes. The gate motif uses non-metallic metal colours so it reads as an embroidered design, and pale parchment receives planned lettering. Thin preliminary text can be corrected before the strokes are strengthened, while the red, black and white fields retain their own controlled highlight sequences.
