Standard Bearer: Camaraderie

July 2009·pp. 72–74

THE SHORT VERSION

A tournament visit reminds Jervis how much he values meeting fellow hobbyists. He adds friendship to gaming, modelling, collecting and storytelling in his account of what draws people to the hobby. Clubs and long-standing gaming partners illustrate that additional motivation. He encourages readers to recognise and renew the relationships formed around their shared interests.

Andy Hall’s Game-a-Week

Andy tracks a year-long attempt to improve through regular play. Early tournament defeats give way to better recall of profiles, equipment and small tactical details. By the fifty-third recorded game his wins narrowly outnumber his losses, though the social experience matters as much as the statistic. Campaign rivalries and playtesting lead him toward another practical weekly target for painting.

Standard Bearer: Niche and Loving It!

Jervis argues that physical miniatures, demanding preparation and face-to-face play are central to the hobby’s appeal. He welcomes useful digital tools while questioning changes that would remove those qualities. Painting and learning complex games reward sustained effort in a way he values. The column treats a specialised audience as a strength rather than a problem to eliminate.

Standard Bearer: Painting Evenings

Studio production nights began as a way to prepare enormous Middle-earth armies. Jervis finds their social value as important as their productivity. Shared sessions also spread techniques and make ambitious terrain or mega-battle projects achievable. His advice covers a suitable location, reminders, materials and allowing a group to grow gradually.
