Painting the Metal
December 2008·p. 85
THE SHORT VERSION
Keith studies weathered statues to place blue-green verdigris in recesses and downward streaks where moisture would collect. Brass is built from dark metal through bronze and silver, washed back and then selectively corroded. The hammer’s steel receives repeated dark washes and coloured glazes before its brighter edges. These separate treatments make the model look aged without giving every metal surface the same colour or texture.
