Painting Metal
September 2008·p. 97
THE SHORT VERSION
Steel armour receives a dark mixed shade, restored metallic highlights and successive brown and black washes before its brightest edges. Gold begins in a brown mixture and is raised with pure gold and silver, then warmed by brown and sepia washes. Neil uses it selectively to mark status. Joe Tomaszewski’s alternative separates an inlaid design with black before painting the gold and re-highlighting the adjacent silver.
